Won't Start Cycle, but will put water in bottom of dishwasher

\015 Turn knob to start sounds like it wants to start, but doesn't do anything. If you turn it a little more the water will pour into the bottom of the dishwasher. Now we have water in the bottom of the dishwasher.\015

This is a typical GE problem which I have seen many times...When a DW\015\012sets for a while not being used...the motor often freezes up....Take\015\012the front (lower panel off....find the motor assembly...(with the DW\015\012unplugged!!...very important)reach in with you hand or a screw\015\012driver...preferably your hand...at the back of the motor...there should\015\012be a impeller blade...you should be able to reach in with a finger and\015\012pull it down..it may be resistant so find a way to hold it in place as\015\012you reach up to the next impeller blade and pull down further...finally\015\012it will all of a sudden free up....after which you plug it back in and\015\012start it up...I am also including a step by step (no drain problem\015\012check list as you may run into an issue like this if it has not been\015\012operated for a while ....notice article # 5).

1. Air gap / Drain hoses
\015\012If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to\015\012see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything\015\012blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher\015\012might not drain properly.
\015\012If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there\015\012is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the\015\012air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the\015\012hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.
\015\012\011\011\011Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.
\015\012\011\011\0112. Broken belt
\015\012\011\011\011Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.
\015\012Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it\015\012might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt,\015\012because it is probably too stretched out.
\015\012\011\011\0113. Pump
\015\012Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller,\015\012takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the\015\012water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the\015\012dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.
\015\012\011\011\0114. Drain solenoid
\015\012Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to\015\012drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the\015\012water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful,\015\012you might have to replace the pump assembly.
\015\012\011\011\0115. Motor
\015\012\011\011\011If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.
\015\012\011\011\011Replace the motor if defective.
\015\012\011\011\0116. Timer
\015\012\011\011\011Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).\015\012\011\015\012 \015\012\011

I hope this helps...it is always useful to include the Model #...more specific instructions can then be provided
